02/01/10 - Our usual New Year round-robin has been played and we have all retired home to rest weary limbs! 16 of us have played 7 games each (8 for the finalists!) over a period of some 3˝ hours. The overall final was (not for the first time) contested between Russell Haythorpe and Graham Boreham, with the former edging out the latter 12-9. The handicap final was a real nail-biter, with Ian Andrewartha just edging out Ben Haythorpe 11-10 - a great match. We retired weary but happy to the bar where awards were presented to the winners and members treated to a selection of reasonably priced home-made curries prepared by club Chef Stuart Haythorpe - thanks, Stuart! An excellent social and sporting occasion timed to combat Christmas lethargy! Next tournament will be at Easter.

Overall result - 1st - Russell Haythorpe, 2nd - Graham Boreham, 3rd - Russell Hackett, 4th - Andrew Howorth.

Handicap Result - 1st - Ian Andrewartha, 2nd - Ben Haythorpe, 3rd - Stuart Haythorpe, 4th - Colin Bocking.

11/11/09 - We have a champion! Congratulations are in order to long-standing Earls Colne Squash Club member Malcolm Gilham, who was recently crowned World Champion in the Masters' Tournament in the over-75 years category held in Sydney, Australia. Well done Malcolm! Details are here,

06/10/09 - Winter League team matches start on Wednesday 21st October 2009 at home to Diss, 7.20pm start. All matches will be played on Wednesday nights.  The team finished 3rd in Division 1 in the Summer League - a great result considering we are a relatively small club and were up against some big names in the squash world.  Details on League Republic web site, when it works!! Try - http://suffolksquash.leaguerepublic.com/Index.do?selectedSeason=8560837&selectedDivision=8020161. Needless to say, all supporters welcome at both home and away matches.

04/07/09 - A most interesting tournament has been concluded. 14 players competed over 3˝ hours to set up two classic finals. Handicap final (21 points, American scoring) was between Adam Burns and Oliver Kearin who had been neck-and-neck all afternoon. With the scores at 10-10, Adam won the final point to take the shield. Overall, Russell Haythorpe and Graham Boreham played a gritty final in which Russell prevailed, 12-9. A new award for the most unexpected result of the day was made to Alan Ridgwell who inexplicably (from his lowly Division 6 base), beat overall winner Russell Haythorpe 11-10. Stunning result, Big Al! Refreshments were taken afterwards and Haythorpe's barbie much enjoyed - thanks Stuart, you are a star!

17/05/09 - We finished 3rd in the Suffolk Winter league (Division 2) 2008/9 - an excellent effort by our team in a division containing many big-name clubs. Here is the final table,

11/04/09 - Our 17 man and one woman (thanks for coming Alison!), Easter Round Robin was another success. After over 3˝ hours of feverish activity, the following pecking order was established,

OVERALL - 1st - Alan Edwards, 2nd - Matt Slater, 3rd - Mike Garnham, 4th - Stuart Haythorpe. An excellent final between the two top scoring players, with Alan just edging out Matt on this occasion.

HANDICAP - The closely fought handicap competition ended in a dead-heat between Kevin Carling and Ben Haythorpe necessitating a tense play-off which Ben won 12-9. Handicap results - 1st - Ben Haythorpe (96 points), 2nd - Kevin Carling (96 points), 3rd - Oliver Kearin (93 points), 4th - Adam Burns (91 points)

Once again, we were treated to Stuart Haythorpe's excellent curries and chilli afterwards. The challenge of the Vindaloo was accepted by many with several players "retired hurt", notably "Big Al" Ridgwell who physically melted into his pint. Thanks to Stuart and all those who participated - a great event and congratulations to all the winners.

03/01/09 - Our 16-man round-robin was a great success.

After just over 3 hours of activity, the following members had distinguished themselves in our 16-man tournament.

OVERALL -1st - Graham Boreham, 2nd - Russell Haythorpe, 3rd - Andrew Howorth, 4th - Russell Hackett, 5th - Martin Crane

HANDICAP - 1st - Adam Burns, 2nd - Nick Oakley, 3rd - Oliver Kearin , 4th - Ian Andrewartha, 5th - Kevin Carling

A very close-fought contest, both overall and in the handicap section. Many thanks to all participants and supporters. It was really great to see such a good turn out and special thanks are due to Stuart Haythorpe for excellent home-made curries and "slow-burner" chilli afterwards.
